Speeding up older computers
We often find with older style computers that there are a few tricks to speed them up. Of course be careful when deleting any files and use your experience and intuition on this.
- Delete the Temporary Internet Items.
- Delete the files in the Windows Temp folder, User Temp folder and in the Prefetch folder.
- Check if the RAM is still registered, can be upgraded, or that there is still more than 1GB of space on the C drive.
- Check that only 1 anti-virus is operating, delete one if there are two running.
- Run Malwarebytes if there is a chance there is any form of virus, spyware, malware or infection.
- For more advanced users, turn off any startup processes in MSCONFIG (type MSCONFIG into run and go to the startup tab).
- Run a defrag on the C drive (can be left running overnight as it can take several hours).
Protecting yourself against unwanted viruses
- Never open any email or email attachment if you do not know the sender
- Choose an anti-virus that is right for your needs. If you are a home user you can use a suitable free anti-virus, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast. For businesses or added security, try AVG 9, Avast Internet Security, or even Kaspersky. Anti-Viruses are really a personal choice when it comes to the right decision and we are happy to help you in decision time.
Keeping your desktop tidy
- It's important as a time saving tool to keep your desktop organised. There are programs out there that can help you organise your files and program shortcuts such as fences.
